Torched Talks with Paralympian Candace Cable
A conversation on disability and megaevents on December 15
A conversation on disability and megaevents on December 15
If you want to understand the potential of 2028, you need to know Candace Cable. As an accomplished Paralympian, Candace has a total of 17 Paralympic and Olympic Games under her belt and was the first woman to medal in both the Summer and Winter Paralympics. Through her firm Candace Cable Consulting, Candace has become an internationally sought-after Disability Cultural Competency educator and speaker. And as a vice-chair and director of Disability and Paralympic Engagement of the original bid committee that brought what will be the first Paralympic Games to Los Angeles, Candace has remained a passionate advocate about what LA has already achieved — and an outspoken critic about just how much more work needs to be done.
Candace is a former member of LA City's Commission on Disability and presented to the U.S. Access Board, the federal agency that sets the design standards in alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act, during their 2024 visit to LA. Candace lives in downtown where she's intimately familiar with the city's infrastructural integrity as well as its shortcomings, and we'll talk about how those shortcomings could become liabilities (literally) as tens of thousands of disabled fans come to town for both the Olympics and Paralympics. Most importantly, we'll discuss what LA needs to do as a city and a region to transform its Paralympic hosting role into a legacy of social inclusion and access.
Come with an open mind and be ready to shift your entire perspective of what these games can mean for LA.
