Jennifer Doyle is a feminist writer, teacher, curator, and self-described "sports crank" who has been sounding the alarm about protecting human rights as megaevents make their way to Los Angeles. She's the organizer of the World Without a World Cup workshops at Human Resources (part 1; part 2) which are "designed to spotlight fútbol communities & countercultures, FIFA and Olympic refuseniks, league historians, players, poets and artists." And with about 100 days until the world's most-watched sporting event kicks off, she's been highlighting how FIFA's utopian vision clashes with our political reality. As Jennifer told me last month: "There's the contradiction of this global celebration of unity and the quiet dread that has taken over the communities here who actually play the game."
Unlike me, Jennifer is also a longtime sports writer, and has reported extensively on LA's grassroots soccer communities, the explosive popularity of women's soccer, and the politicization of women's sports. Her forthcoming book Sex Test "confronts the policing of the category of women's sports — addressing sex testing, historical prohibitions against women's participation in sports, and forms of debilitation that haunt every field in which women compete." Let's just say we'll have a lot to talk about as the global sports spotlight turns towards LA.
Grab an afternoon snack along with your tough questions.
